The Tamar Valley Mining Heritage Project

About the project

Making your heritage accessible and safe

A key part of the Project is to provide new public access to land in private ownership that will, in turn, allow visitors to reach previously hidden parts of the local industrial heritage. The project provides extensive opportunity for access for all.

  • Conservation and safety works to 5 major mine sites, including Devon Great Consols
  • Stabilisation works of 3 chimneys which form key landscape features and are at risk of collapse
  • Conservation works to the Tavistock Canal

Caring for your landscape

The Tamar Valley is recognised as being of outstanding national significance. The Valley’s natural landscape qualities need to be protected.

  • Conservation of landscape and wildlife features
  • Range of opportunities for habitat creation
  • Habitat management and invasive species control programme
  • Conservation of orchards and market gardening sites
  • Small scale enhancement of the landscape to include provision/enhancement of car parking areas and conservation of field boundaries

Enjoying the great outdoors

The Tamar Valley is a magnificent landscape with a rich heritage. New access provision will be carefully planned.

  • Creation of 60km of new trails & footpaths
  • Development of an extensive network of trails utilising the former Devon Great Consols - Morwellham mineral railway; Bere Alston - Tavistock railway, and the Tavistock canal
  • Development of links and improvements to the existing public rights of way network
